Performers Rights Society of Kenya (PRISK) is a collective management organisation licensed by the Kenya Copyright Board to represent performers in musical and dramatic works.
PRISK is hence a performer works licensing company appointed as a collecting society under GAZETTE NOTICE NO. 12322. PRISK is a non-profit company limited by guarantee, and not having a share capital.
PRISK administers related rights to musicians and actors. This can be further classified as follows:
Musicians: Vocalists (in main role and featured role), Track producers, Background Vocalists and Instrumentalists.
Actors: Performers in recorded films and series in main, featuring and supporting roles.
- Receiving royalties when your work is played on radio, TV and other public places in Kenya.
- Access to social and cultural fund (This is subject to rules and procedures laid out for the fund)
No deduction of 50% administrative fee for royalty collection. - Receiving royalty payment on international plays of your work from other Collective Management Organization once PRISK enters into reciprocal agreements with internal CMOs.
- Attending trainings, workshops and sensitization seminars that PRISK organizes from time to time in cooperation with various stakeholders in the entertainment industry.
- Chance to interact with other performers during meetings organized by PRISK hence grown our career.
- Priority access to opportunities presented to musicians and actors as and when they arise.
- Through PRISK performers have a unified voice to let their concerns and matters that affect them known to other institution and the government.
- Filled in rights holder declaration form
- Filled in sound recording declaration form (for musicians) or audiovisual recording declaration form (for actors)
- Copy of commercially published recording
- Two(2) passport-size photographs (colour)
- Copy of valid national identity card, passport or birth certificate
- Copy of I-Tax Updated Kenya Revenue Authority PIN certificate
- Copy of valid national identity card, passport or birth certificate of next of kin
- Five Thousand Kenya shillings (KES. 5,000) membership application fee payable via M-Pesa.
Yes. Group registrations are permissible. However, it is important to note that each performer has an individual right, hence separate registration is encouraged.
PRISK represents musicians and actors. This can be further classified as follows:

Actors: Performers in recorded films and series in main, featuring and supporting roles.
Some of the benefits that performers stand to enjoy by registering as members of PRISK include:
- Receiving royalty payments when their works are played on radio, TV and other public places in Kenya.

PRISK administers performance rights in sound recordings and audio/visual works in the following avenues:
- Broadcasting – licensing of broadcasting stations for the use of performance in a sound recording or audio-visual work
- Communication to the Public – business establishments that publicly play sound recordings and audio-visual works e .g Public Service Vehicles (PSV), Hotels, Restaurants, clubs, Bars, Supermarkets, Banks, Cinema Halls, Shopping Malls, Music Stores, Events, Cyber Cafes, Salons, Gymnasiums etc.
- New Media Services – online exploitation through digital downloads by streaming or as a mobile phone ring tone, video-on-demand and catch-up television.
- Cable Retransmission – Cable operators can pick up a terrestrial television signal and retransmit over a cable network. In return for the transmission, cable operators should pay into a collective pot that is divided amongst the relevant rights-holders as payment for the use of their works.
- Synchronisation – when work is synchronised to visual images, video or film.
- Blank media levies – blank media is a levy on blank recording equipment or devices that is paid to rights-holders as a compensation for legalised private copying.
- Rental – for audio-visual performers rental remuneration should be paid by video/DVD outlets or distributors for the use of performers’ works in the rental market.

Performers rights subsist from the date of publication of the sound recording or fixed performance until the end of the fiftieth calendar year following the year of publication.
Yes. The two Collective Management Organizations (CMOs) administer different rights i.e. PRISK - (Related Rights), MCSK (Copyright). Therefore, when you register with PRISK your rights as a performer are catered for whereas by registering with MCSK you are represented as a composer/publisher or author of your works.
